Some claim that the Hebrew word פרי (PREE) is the source for the English word ‘fruit,’ while other etymologists disagree. The word can also be used as a noun, as in God’s first command to Adam in Genesis (1:28), “Be fruitful and multiply” פְּרוּ וּרְבוּ (PROO oo-ri-VOO) or in our verse, those who experience God’s deliverance will plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest, PREE te-vu-AH. About Today’s Photograph
Photograph of a grape cluster by Eliyahu Alpern of Tzfat in the Upper Galilee. “Wine has been made in the Land of Israel since pre-Biblical times and its production resumed at the end of the nineteenth century, when the multimillionaire Baron Rothchild financed the construction of two wineries, in Rishon Le-Zion and Zikhron Ya’akov. In the early 1980’s, with the opening of the Golan Heights Winery, Israeli wines became an immediate success, gained the respect of many wine critics abroad, and became best-cellars (!).” From Israel for Beginner’s by Angelo Colorni.
