The Crown of Thorns
In the beginning, when our first parents were placed in the Garden of Eden, there was no death. Everything was without blemish, perfect, and full of life. It was due to Adam and Eve's fall that God had to kill an animal "for the wages of sin is death" Romans 6:23. However, not only was death introduced, but as it says in Genesis 3:17, the ground was cursed too. Think about it. What are some evidences today that the ground has been cursed? The dead leaves, fungi on trees, but also thorns. God did not originally create thorns because what do they do? They cause pain, but it is because of sin that thorns came into existence.
Now jump with me to the time of our Saviour's death on Calvary. As a form of mockery Jesus was clothed with a purple robe (symbolizing royalty) and a crown composed of thorns. Why did Jesus come to earth? He came to bear our sins so that "whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life" John 3:16. What a coincidence! Thorns represent sin and it was a crown of thorns that our Saviour wore when dying on the cross for us! The whole crucifixion of Jesus' death is symbolic-from the concept, to the crown on His head, to His final words. Some food for thought...
